The name of the game is WARRIORS RACE, a 26 mile themed skateboard race though New York City’s gritty and unpredictable city streets. The event re-enacted the 1970′s classic NYC gang thriller, “The Warriors” movie . Dressed as gangs from the movie, teams of 3 were challenged to skate 26 miles from the top of NYC’s MTA 1 train at Van Cortland Park (Bronx) to the very bottom of the MTA F train at Brooklyn’s famous Coney Island in front of the Cyclone Roller Coaster.

51 supercharged traffic surfing skaters assembled at Van Cortland Park, BX on July 23rd to experience the most challenging skateboard race in New York City. Through more than 500 traffic intersections, congested city streets, 5 checkpoints, thunderstorms, and 90 degree temperatures skaters faced the fear of distance skating. 33/51 skaters completed the race in just over 2 hours. 11 teams completed the challenge and 11 teams achieved every checkpoint and team requirements, together. Teamwork was an incredible element of the race.

The Warriors Race, hosted by NYC skate collaberative “Rat Rod Longboarding” challenged Push Culture skaters to complete a marathon distance in crews of 3 to encourage teamwork. The idea was to create a themed event involving teams, costumes and a manifest. The movie is a favorite among the Rat Rod Crew and simple to re-enact. 17 well costumed crews showed for roll call at Van Cortland Park, each crew was given a race bag containing a general race map and manifest of required checkpoints. The manifest looked like this:
” alt=”" />

1. ANY BODEGA IN THE BRONX, TEAM MUST PURCHASE 3 BOTTLES OR CANS. The 3 bottles/cans (full or empty) must be presented at the finish line WITH 1 RECEIPT FROM THE BRONX. Use race bag for storage.

2. ANY BODEGA IN MANHATTAN, TEAM MUST PURCHASE 3 BOTTLES OR CANS. Same as above, empty or full. 3 cans and 1 RECEIPT FROM MANHATTAN at finishline. Use race bag for storage.

3. UNION SQUARE - THE LIZZIES WILL BE AT THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF UNION SQUARE WAITING FOR THE 1ST TEAM TO ARRIVE AND FREE THEM! 1ST TEAM WILL TRADE STICKERS WITH THE LIZZIES AS PROOF. THERE IS A TRASH CAN AT THAT BRICK CORNER OF THE PARK, AT THE FOOT OF THE WHEELCHAIR RAMP AT STREET LEVEL. YOU MUST PLACE YOUR TEAM STICKER ON THE TRASH CAN AND TAKE A PHOTO IF YOU CAN. Just like the movie, everybody is racing to Union Sq. to get the girl. First team to Union Square will locate “The Lizzies” using instructions above. The Lizzies will trade a team sticker with the 1st team, then the ladies will begin the race. Every team must leave a sticker at the manifest card meeting location and snap a photo on your phone/camera for reference after the race, and for production DON’T FORGET!

4. TOP OF THE BRIDGE – The Warriors Race is choose your own adventure. Teams must cross the Williamsburg, Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridge to enter Brooklyn. Leave a sticker AT THE TOP OF THE BRIDGE and take a photo on your phone or camera if you have one. Pictures will be used by our production team.

5. ANY BODEGA IN BROOKLYN, TEAM MUST PURCHASE 3 BOTTLES OR CANS AND COLLECT 1 RECEIPT FROM THE BROOKLYN BODEGA. Use race bag for storage of all 9 bottles/cans collected during the race.

5. FINISH LINE – Surf Ave/W. 10th St, Coney Island – This street corner is the entrance to “The Cyclone” wooden rollercoaster, a NYC Landmark. This corner is across the street from the above ground D train. Teams must finish race together, all 3 skaters/biker must present a sticker and the team’s race bag containing 9 full/empty cans/bottles and 3 receipts from 3 boroughs at the finish to be considered for the awards ceremony. LOOK FOR THE TWINS, ADAM AND JESSE GARBACZ AT THE FINISH – present you team sticker.

” alt=”" />

The race was prefaced by a ceremony re-enacting the Warriors movie introduction. Gangs representing the diverse neighborhoods of New York’s 5 boroughs gathered at Van Cortland Park. “CAN YOU DIGG IT?” is the famous quote by Cyrus, the leader of all gangs. The phrase was chanted and echoed though the park. 51 stoked skaters repeated the verse over and over before the 7:20pm start. The Warriors bellowed the creepy and infamous phrase, “COME OUT AND PLAYAY”, then the race began. Broadway in the Bronx was crowded with experienced push race skaters attempting to complete the uncompleted, 26 miles.

” alt=”" />

Before the Warriors Race, NYC has been host to MANY skateboard push races. Rat Rod Longboarding hosts The Brooklyn Blitz (4 miles), Rat Rod Relays (4 miles) and Warriors (26 miles). Push Culture friends, Concrete Kings host a number of fun races; The Mini Bomb (6 miles), Track Meet (Varying sprints/distance) and weekly meetups. The most famous New York City race, The Broadway Bomb (8 miles) is every October and hosted by The New York Longboard Association. NYLBA also hosts the Central Park Race (6 miles) every June. The future of distance push racing is diversity of competition and Marathon Distance is a good place to begin.

Hey all you skate boppers, The Warriors Race is TOMORROW, are you ready? The 26 mile skate will test you mentally and physically. Expect a high temperature of 87f and a low of 77f during the race with a chance of thunderstorms. The sunset will happen at 8:21pm, be ready for a dark skate! How long do you expect the race to last? Does anyone have a guess of the top finishing time? LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW. Adam and Jesse Garbacz will be at the finishline for winning verification. (Finish – Surf Ave/10th st, across from the Cyclone Roller Coaster). The Warriors Race is your chance to show NYC how fast we really can skate. Some believe we are foolish to skate 26 miles in this heat, I say drink water! Some don’t think they can manage the distance, we say GO HARD OR GO HOME. The Warriors Race is not for everyone and not everyone has signed up. The clock is ticking and 4:20pm on 7/23 is the final deadline for race entry. DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? DO YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF NEW YORK CITY HISTORY? The choice is yours.

The rules are simple.

1. DON’T BE LATE! Tell your boss your busy and get to Bustin by 4pm. We will have the entire Lizzies team here getting everyone dressed for the event with rags we have around here for the video. If a lady at the shop asks you to wear body paint/makeup DO ITTT!!! The Warriors Video is going to be epic, dress the part!

2. DRESS THE PART! You all selected your teams and have ZERO excuse of, “I didn’t know I had to dress up” or “I didn’t know how to get ahold of my teammates”. Trust me, if you dress wacko you will look good. Go nuts!!!

3. NO RULES! Other than the checkpoints in your race pack you will receive at the start there are no rules EXCEPT – NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!!!! no busses, trains, cabs, or airplanes. SKATE! or bike if you are with at least 2 skaters. Race starts at Van Cortland Park, BX and finishes at Coney Island in front of the Cyclone ride at Surf Ave and 10th st. EASY!

DRINK WATER – GET REST – BRING A TEAM VIDEO/STILL CAMERA – SEE YOU AT 4PM @ BUSTIN OR 6PM @ VAN CORTLAND PARK. NYC MTA 1 TRAIN TO VAN CORTLAND PARK, END OF THE LINE. READ PREVIOUS POST FOR MORE DETAILS!!!

First thought…..Thank you! To the Concrete Kings and everyone else that is PushCulture. Thanks to our sponsors..Bustin, Arbor, Bern, Original, Landyachtz, and Uncle Funky’s skate shop. We couldn’t have done this without you all!

Second thought….Booyah! The first annual Concrete Kings “Mini-Bomb” was a huge success! We had 100-120 riders show up from as far as Florida and maybe even further. And as I rolled up, late as usual, I was greeted with a rolling wave of stoke and scores of eager riders ready to start. Sorry guys, we spent 30 minutes looking for a parking spot close to the after-party location….prizes and my dad’s grill were in the trunk. Also greeting me at the 116th and Broadway starting line were Columbia University students, pedestrians and even the NBC news team. I did as many greetings as I could, lined up and then my co-host/organizer Rob Rodriguez shouted go and the race was off!

The race was 6+ miles of NYC traffic surfing, pedestrian dodging, adrenaline pumping fun! The first rule of this race was…”There are no rules”. I wanted this race to represent what you would see on any given day as the Concrete Kings shred the city’s streets and that includes bypassing lights, caution signs, cops and even skitching. This too is PushCulture. Adam Crigler caught a skitch that people will envy until the next race. The cab was waiting at the crosswalk, the lights turned green, the heavens opened up and Crigler went flying down 5th Ave doing at least 30. Awesome! He wasn’t the first or the last but it was definitely the best! After that it was a close race for second. The fastest riders in the city were there and to them six miles of pushing through the city non-stop is an everyday occurrence. But this push race is more than speed…it is about awareness, daring and natural instinct. You have to be ready for the cars that want to cut you off, the light that is about to turn red or the pedestrians that litter your path. There can be as many variables as there are people in NYC, the only thing you can do is be ready to react. This too is PushCulture.

Adam Crigler did the course in a fast 21 minutes and was rewarded with a crisp $100 and his choice of prizes. Big Up bro!!!!! Evan Armbrister really made his presence known with a strong second. Apparently he can do more than talk trash! …That might seem harsh but I bet he’s doing that crazy laugh of his right now. Do work. Look out for this guy to do some real work in the races to come! Congrats bro and don’t get too comfortable…The Rifts Are Coming….RIFTS! (Read the blog if you don’t know what If you don’t know what I’m talking about).

No man..or woman was left behind and we waited at the Union Square until everyone crossed the finish line. Their was tons of love being spread and no drama. We left Union with crowds of people staring in amazement. Way to go Concrete Kings! The group as a whole skated a few blocks where my dad aka Bear began to grill and everyone prepared for the awards ceremony.

Finishers in order from 1-10.

Adam Crigler. Evan Armbrister. Solomon Lang(Me). Kiefer Dixon. Wilfried Bouillon. Caspar Henrici. Travis Davenport. Javon Prince Lang. Jeff Vyain aka the wiggler. Nelson Oliver.

Video from the race and finish line are being worked out now…Thanks Jeff.

You would think that after 6+ miles of continuous kicking that the group would be ready to take it easy….not the Concrete Kings. The only breaks were to grab a hot dog or hamburger and to listen for prizes being announced. After that it was back to skating with a few more contests yet to be held…..There was the sprint race spanning a few blocks that was won by Mike Dallas aka Diesel. The Best Trick by Wilfried Bouillon. And the Hippie Jump by Paulie Connor.

All together the day went perfectly. I can’t thank everyone enough. The Kings for representing us so well. Our sponsors for the dope schwag. Open Road for help making the awards ceremony possible. My dad for laying it down on the grill even though he had just done the race as well. And everyone who attended and made this such a wonderful experience. You are PushCulture!

Stay tuned for info on the Concrete Kings next event……”The Track Meet”.

We heard from many of you that you need more time. Tons of Maestro’s have been shipping out and it seems like everyone wants to make a push culture video. As such, the Push Culture Longboarding Video Contest has officially been extended until September 1st. See the original post below for details and get going!!

//////////////////////—–ORIGINAL CONTEST DETAILS——\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

At Bustin Boards Brooklyn we develop boards for Push Culture longboarding in New York City. What does this mean? It means we use our boards for everything from getting to work to going to concerts and we almost never use cars. Living in the city, every skate is an adventure and no two rides are the same. There is Point A and Point B, but what matters is life in between. Where do you skate to and from? This contest is for you to show off your version of longboard commuting in style and show the world how you live life one skate at a time.

Here is the deal. The theme of the video should be “My Push Culture”. Choose a Point A and a Point B and make a video showing the thrill of the line in between. You can do tricks, you can do speed, you can do sliding, you can do off-road, its YOUR commute and its your life, JUST MAKE IT FUN. The winners will be the people who get the most creative during their commute and capture it the best.

DUE DATE: August 1st

RULES:
1. Video should be roughly one minute long, give or take.
2. The rest is your call, but the general rule of thumb is “make it interesting”. We don’t care if you jump off your board to help an old lady cross the street or ride off a dock at the end, but please don’t just hold a camera and skate down the road filming your wheels. Take some tips from the links below and really get into it, YOU HAVE TWO MONTHS!
3. You DO NOT have to ride a Bustin longboard, you just have to love longboarding. The winners will be those who make us wish we could skate their town, not necessarily their board.

PRIZES:
-The first place winner can customize a FREE MAESTRO DECK and set it up with their choice of TRUCKS and WHEELS (with standard abec7 bearings and hardware).
-Second and third place win a set of Boca wheels (your choice of size).
-Fourth place gets a Bustin hoodie (any size, any color).

HOW TO ENTER:
-Upload your video to your personal youtube account with the title “Push Culture Longboarding: [your board model]“. For example “Push Culture Longboarding: Bustin Strike”. In the description for your video please also link back to this blog post so that viewers will be able to vote on your video by leaving a comment below.

COMMENTS AND VOTING:
-We would like to hear what people think of the videos. Make sure to put the link to this blog post in your video description so that people can comment here on your video. Also, feel free to leave a comment announcing your video and giving us some background where you skate and why you love Push Culture Longboarding. The winners will be chosen by the Bustin Boards staff and announced in early August. We will also feature the winner videos on our homepage and blog.
