Introducing the new “Longboard Loft NYC” from Bustin

written by Ryan October 7, 2010

Hi folks.  I’m coming to you tonight from what feels like the bottom of a Christmas tree to break the news about the upcoming expansion and re-branding of our Brooklyn store.  When we opened the store last year we planned and hoped to take this step and have been diligently saving our pennies ever since so that we could afford to do it right.  I’m writing this blog because I’m sitting in my office surrounded by the best of what this industry has to offer and I just can’t keep the secret any longer.   Tomorrow we’re going to start populating our Brooklyn store with some of the new items and rolling out the new store’s new branding as Longboard Loft NYC.

Why wouldn’t we just keep the name as the Bustin store?  Its because we want this store to be the longboard industry store, not just the Bustin store.  Its because we’re loyal to this sport and this industry and we want the longboarding community in New York City to have access to the very best decks and components in the industry (not just the standard completes from the standard companies at your standard sporting goods store).  This industry is blowing up and innovation is coming from every angle.  We want to give that innovation, objectively to the people who have helped us innovate our brand here in NYC.  We felt like the only way to do this was to begin separating the store from our brand.  Don’t get us wrong, there will be no decrease in Bustin selection at the store and we’ll continue to have hundreds of one-of-kind special edition boards to browse daily (our artists have too much fun printing them to stop that).  On the contrary, we’re planning to start releasing short run special Bustin models through store and let our NYC community help us evolve them (a sure topic for an upcoming blog, standbye).  Getting back to my point… when it comes down to it, I guess we’re just proud of the industry we exist within and appreciative of the community that surrounds us.  Unlike many industries, in the longboard world our competitors are our friends.  Whether I’m shooting the sh_t with Jason from Comet about effective international distribution or talking parenting with Brian from Earthwing, these guys are my boys and I believe in what we’re doing TOGETHER.

With that said, I present to you LONGBOARD LOFT NYC.  Most of the new product will be in the store at the start of business on Saturday (though two of the motherload shipments from Rayne and Landyatchz don’t arrive until mid-next week).  Also, we will soon be going live with a dedicated Longboard Loft NYC website, twitter account and facebook account were we’ll give special access and deals to friends and followers (stay tuned to the Bustin Blog for details until then).  And that’s just the start.  We are also launching a super generous store customer loyalty program that will give you store credit for all purchases made in the store (details available next weekend).  And then there’s more.  And more.  And more.  Our ideas are only stifled by the hours in the day but our general rule of thumb is to give New York City longboarders EVERYTHING they want.  We’re working with Theseus at Rat Rod to develop wheel customizing machines and super Rat Rod setup offerings.  We’ve redesigned the store and expanded our riders lounge which now includes two outdoor board stations where you can jump straight from our freshly paved street to tune your board while your friends skate around you.  All in all, we’re just trying to make Longboard Loft NYC the headquarters for skaters of all types and place where you can get a great deal and a great longboard experience.

As I mentioned, this weekend we’re doing a sort of “soft opening” with most of the new stuff, but our Grand Opening will take place next weekend, the Broadway Bomb weekend!  We’re teaming up with Concrete Wave for tons of giveaways and discounts.  Michael Brooke will be setting up headquarters at our store for the weekend and will have about four thousand copies of the magazine and dvd (and knowing michael, much more than that)  The official Bomb after part is being hosted at Rose bar across the street and the Longboard Loft NYC store will then be fully stocked and bumping.  Stop in for tons of free stuff and take a look at a longboard selection that will make you pee your pants.

Here’s just some of the product that showed up in my office today and will make its way to the store this weekend:

My office at 3 PM today.  Yes, I realized that for a brief moment I was enjoying the coolest work environment on the planet and, yes, I felt like Santa Clause some too.

People at the shop are bugging about the new Abec11 Centrax wheels.

New Loaded Carbon fingered slide gloves sit atop of mound of Khiro accessories.  Holy crap Khiro makes alot of stuff and we have it all including every bushing, bushing kit, riser, riser kit and more hardware than Home Depot.

Yeah, Surf Rodz are actually as bad ass as they look in the pictures.  They’re not cheap, but their worth every penny.

Surf Rodz’ attention to detail = truly bananas.  I’ve never seen a more precise, more refined product.

Did you here Venom is making wheels.  We got em all.

Just a portion of the candy shop assortment we’re getting in from Seismic and 3DM.  Our wall of wheels is reaching capacity.

If you havent seen this skate tool you have to check it out.  Can you re-thread your axles with your current skate tool?

Vicious griptape is much badder in real life than I thought.  You could hurt somebody with this stuff.

For those who love Seismic, we’re expanding our assortment.

Gun Metal indy style trucks here now.  Both sizes of the reverse hanger version coming next week.

Box 1 – every Randal truck and baseplate made.  Box 2 – Tail Devils so you can be as cool as Theseus.  Box 3 – risers with lights in funny boxes from China.  If you skate at night in NYC you know this actually isnt a terrible idea despite the packaging.

We’ll have enough decks in the shop next week to make you cry.  This is just the beginning.

They keep going and going and going.

And going.  Wait until you see whats still on the UPS trucks headed towards Brooklyn next week.  Again, everything shown here and more will be available in the store THIS WEEKEND.  Next week we’re getting in the second round and the shop will be fully loaded during the weekend of the Broadway Bomb.  Come check us out and share your ideas.

thanks guys for all the comments. you can call the store what you want and thanks for supporting the idea. and Pete, don’t worry, part of the reason we are seperating the brands is so that we can also move full speed ahead with Bustin as well. We have tons of cool stuff in development and you can expect a crazy year of new and better products. Thanks my friends for taking the time to comment, this is really a dream for us and we’re so excited to give this store to New York City!

I wish I lived in NYC now.

John of Calgary October 9, 2010 at 9:30 pm

So does this mean your online shop will sell both Bustin decks AND other brands, or will it just remain Bustin-only?

tim October 9, 2010 at 11:58 pm

yes put it all online for us australians!

Adam October 10, 2010 at 10:09 pm

Hey guys Im pretty sure The Longboard Loft will be a separate website then bustin. So people can still order custom decks but can also go to the longboard loft and order anything they want. Yes we are carrying Sayshun boards and Comet boards. Not sure which we have in right now. COme in the shop and check them out~!

Ryan October 10, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Thanks for all the stoke guys. Adam was half right. We have setup http://www.longboardloftnyc.com, but it will only be a simple, blog format website used to share product info and reviews from the store and will not have an ecommerce component to begin with. As we build up inventory in the store we may open up the website to sales, but for now the store is pretty much NYC brick & mortar. We will have very select and rare items from across the industry, which tend to be items difficult to keep in stock and, thus, difficult to sell online.

As for brands and models, we are stocking up on models based on our experience and on suggestions from the manufacturers, but will be relying on our community to suggest what new items we should carry. We really want the store to be interactive, so let us know what you want and we’ll get it! (First come through next weekend and take a look at what we have).

I always admire the fact that bustin was like a dream, a project of innovation where you raised over companies that represented the mainstream. Now, I think, if you start bringing the competition along and provide them the bustin altar to be there with you, available for sale, gaining space then your products will lose the stage reserve for your products. Is this an exchange? The store will get other products and bustin will be sold in other stores?

I love the fact that when you entered the bustin store everything looked organized, in place. Keep it looking like that, do not overfill it with dozens of boards from other brands like many skateboard stores so cramped with products that you just want to go away, not get in.

I am not so stoked by your decision of growing (like the majority of readers of this blog), selling other products (there are many stores like that) because I think that may affect negatively the sale of the bustin brand. I do not even want to think you are shooting your foot.

Toyota did not grow selling Fords but by improving all its cars. But this is not the auto market and I simply do not know the longboarding market, if bustin is sustainable just by itself, whether it is better to sell other brands to grow or keep yourselves afloat. I do not know the obstacles, punches, sacrifices you have done to come to this level of success, but I bet you will not come so far to make decisions that will hinder your dreams, business and sales.

So far I have enjoyed my 6 months of being a bustin fan and I may like the new idea of the store once I visit it again this year. You have make me and three more friends skate again for which I am truly grateful.

I wish you the best in this new endeavor and if Longboard Loft NYC is the way to go, so be it.

Take care.

Leopoldo – thanks for the thoughts man. In all honesty you may be absolutely right. We’ve never been great at the “business” part of this, but in a way I think that is what makes us who we are. Whether its a good business decision or not, its hard to ignore all the cool stuff that is going on in this industry. And don’t worry, Bustin is not backing off in the least. We have several new models in development that are going to blow minds in Spring 2011. Thanks again for your thoughts my friend!

Leopoldo Finol October 25, 2010 at 12:53 pm

Well I hope the business gets great for you and bustin. I really like the fact that you guys have success (look, part of the 500 skaters that showed up in the bomb was because of Bustin) and do not stop dreamming.

Thanks for answering.
