WARRIORS RACE 2010 – 51 LONGBOARDERS PUSH TO ACHIEVE NEW YORK CITY DISTANCE SKATE RECORD

Photobucket” alt=”" />

The name of the game is WARRIORS RACE, a 26 mile themed skateboard race though New York City’s gritty and unpredictable city streets.  The event re-enacted the 1970′s classic NYC gang thriller, “The Warriors” movie .  Dressed as gangs from the movie, teams of 3 were challenged to skate 26 miles from the top of NYC’s MTA 1 train at Van Cortland Park (Bronx) to the very bottom of the MTA F train at Brooklyn’s famous Coney Island in front of the Cyclone Roller Coaster.

The Lizzies

51 supercharged traffic surfing skaters assembled at Van Cortland Park, BX on July 23rd to experience the most challenging skateboard race in New York City. Through more than 500 traffic intersections, congested city streets, 5 checkpoints, thunderstorms,  and 90 degree temperatures skaters faced the fear of distance skating.  33/51 skaters completed the race in just over 2 hours.  11 teams completed the challenge and 11 teams achieved every checkpoint and team requirements, together.  Teamwork was an incredible element of the race.
The Turnbull ACs and the Lizzies

The Warriors Race, hosted by NYC skate collaberative “Rat Rod Longboarding” challenged Push Culture skaters to complete a marathon distance in crews of 3 to encourage teamwork.  The idea was to create a themed event involving teams, costumes and a manifest.  The movie is a favorite among the Rat Rod Crew and simple to re-enact.  17 well costumed crews showed for roll call at Van Cortland Park, each crew was given a race bag containing a general race map and manifest of required checkpoints.  The manifest looked like this:
The Brooklyn Killers” alt=”" />

1. ANY BODEGA IN THE BRONX, TEAM MUST PURCHASE 3 BOTTLES OR CANS.  The 3 bottles/cans (full or empty) must be presented at the finish line WITH 1 RECEIPT FROM THE BRONX. Use race bag for storage.

2. ANY BODEGA IN MANHATTAN, TEAM MUST PURCHASE 3 BOTTLES OR CANS. Same as above, empty or full.  3 cans and 1 RECEIPT FROM MANHATTAN at finishline. Use race bag for storage.

3. UNION SQUARE -  THE LIZZIES WILL BE AT THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF UNION SQUARE WAITING FOR THE 1ST TEAM TO ARRIVE AND FREE THEM! 1ST TEAM WILL TRADE STICKERS WITH THE LIZZIES AS PROOF.  THERE IS A TRASH CAN AT THAT BRICK CORNER OF THE PARK, AT THE FOOT OF THE WHEELCHAIR RAMP AT STREET LEVEL.  YOU MUST PLACE YOUR TEAM STICKER ON THE TRASH CAN AND TAKE A PHOTO IF YOU CAN. Just like the movie, everybody is racing to Union Sq. to get the girl.  First team to Union Square will locate “The Lizzies” using instructions above.  The Lizzies will trade a team sticker with the 1st team, then the ladies will begin the race.  Every team must leave a sticker at the manifest card meeting location and snap a photo on your phone/camera for reference after the race, and for production DON’T FORGET!

4. TOP OF THE BRIDGE – The Warriors Race is choose your own adventure.  Teams must cross the Williamsburg, Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridge to enter Brooklyn.  Leave a sticker AT THE TOP OF THE BRIDGE and take a photo on your phone or camera if you have one.  Pictures will be used by our production team.

5. ANY BODEGA IN BROOKLYN, TEAM MUST PURCHASE 3 BOTTLES OR CANS AND COLLECT 1 RECEIPT FROM THE BROOKLYN BODEGA.  Use race bag for storage of all 9 bottles/cans collected during the race.

5.  FINISH LINESurf Ave/W. 10th St, Coney Island – This street corner is the entrance to “The Cyclone” wooden rollercoaster, a NYC Landmark.  This corner is across the street from the above ground D train. Teams must finish race together, all 3 skaters/biker must present a sticker and the team’s race bag containing 9 full/empty cans/bottles and 3 receipts from 3 boroughs at the finish to be considered for the awards ceremony.  LOOK FOR THE TWINS, ADAM AND JESSE GARBACZ AT THE FINISH – present you team sticker.

Photobucket” alt=”" />

The race was prefaced by a ceremony re-enacting the Warriors movie introduction.  Gangs representing the diverse neighborhoods of New York’s 5 boroughs gathered at Van Cortland Park.  “CAN YOU DIGG IT?” is the famous quote by Cyrus, the leader of all gangs.  The phrase was chanted and echoed though the park.  51 stoked skaters repeated the verse over and over before the 7:20pm start.  The Warriors bellowed the creepy and infamous phrase, “COME OUT AND PLAYAY”, then the race began.  Broadway in the Bronx was crowded with experienced push race skaters attempting to complete the uncompleted, 26 miles.

The Lizzies” alt=”" />

Before the Warriors Race, NYC has been host to MANY skateboard push races.  Rat Rod Longboarding hosts The Brooklyn Blitz (4 miles), Rat Rod Relays (4 miles) and Warriors (26 miles).  Push Culture friends, Concrete Kings host a number of fun races; The Mini Bomb (6 miles), Track Meet (Varying sprints/distance) and weekly meetups.  The most famous New York City race, The Broadway Bomb (8 miles) is every October and hosted by The New York Longboard Association.  NYLBA also hosts the Central Park Race (6 miles) every June. The future of distance push racing is diversity of competition and Marathon Distance is a good place to begin.

The day we ruled the streets: A Mini-Bomb recap

First thought…..Thank you! To the Concrete Kings and everyone else that is PushCulture. Thanks to our sponsors..Bustin, Arbor, Bern, Original, Landyachtz, and Uncle Funky’s skate shop. We couldn’t have done this without you all!

Second thought….Booyah! The first annual Concrete Kings “Mini-Bomb” was a huge success! We had 100-120 riders show up from as far as Florida and maybe even further. And as I rolled up, late as usual, I was greeted with a rolling wave of stoke and scores of eager riders ready to start. Sorry guys, we spent 30 minutes looking for a parking spot close to the after-party location….prizes and my dad’s grill were in the trunk. Also greeting me at the 116th and Broadway starting line were Columbia University students, pedestrians and even the NBC news team. I did as many greetings as I could, lined up and then my co-host/organizer Rob Rodriguez shouted go and the race was off!

The race was 6+ miles of NYC traffic surfing, pedestrian dodging, adrenaline pumping fun! The first rule of this race was…”There are no rules”. I wanted this race to represent what you would see on any given day as the Concrete Kings shred the city’s streets and that includes bypassing lights, caution signs, cops and even skitching. This too is PushCulture. Adam Crigler caught a skitch that people will  envy until the next race. The cab was waiting at the crosswalk, the lights turned green, the heavens opened up and Crigler went flying down 5th Ave doing at least 30. Awesome! He wasn’t the first or the last but it was definitely the best! After that it was a close race for second. The fastest riders in the city were there and to them six miles of pushing through the city non-stop is an everyday occurrence. But this push race is more than speed…it is about awareness, daring and natural instinct. You have to be ready for the cars that want to cut you off, the light that is about to turn red or the pedestrians that litter your path. There can be as many variables as there are people in NYC, the only thing you can do is be ready to react. This too is PushCulture.

Adam Crigler did the course in a fast 21 minutes and was rewarded with a crisp $100 and his choice of prizes. Big Up bro!!!!! Evan Armbrister really made his presence known with a strong second. Apparently he can do more than talk trash! …That might seem harsh but I bet he’s doing that crazy laugh of his right now. Do work.  Look out for this guy to do some real work in the races to come! Congrats bro and don’t get too comfortable…The Rifts Are Coming….RIFTS! (Read the blog if you don’t know what If you don’t know what I’m talking about).

No man..or woman was left behind and we waited at the Union Square until everyone crossed the finish line. Their was tons of love being spread and no drama. We left Union with crowds of people staring in amazement. Way to go Concrete Kings! The group as a whole skated a few blocks where my dad aka Bear began to grill and everyone prepared for the awards ceremony.

Finishers in order from 1-10.

Adam Crigler. Evan Armbrister. Solomon Lang(Me). Kiefer Dixon. Wilfried Bouillon. Caspar Henrici. Travis Davenport. Javon Prince Lang.  Jeff Vyain aka the wiggler. Nelson Oliver.

Video from the race and finish line are being worked out now…Thanks Jeff.

You would think that after 6+ miles of continuous kicking that the group would be ready to take it easy….not the Concrete Kings.  The only breaks were to grab a hot dog or hamburger and to listen for prizes being announced. After that it was back to skating with a few more contests yet to be held…..There was the sprint race spanning a few blocks that was won by Mike Dallas aka Diesel. The Best Trick by Wilfried Bouillon. And the Hippie Jump by Paulie Connor.

All together the day went perfectly. I can’t thank everyone enough. The Kings for representing us so well. Our sponsors for the dope schwag. Open Road for help making the awards ceremony possible. My dad for laying it down on the grill even though he had just done the race as well. And everyone who attended and made this such a wonderful experience. You are PushCulture!

Stay tuned for info on the Concrete Kings next event……”The Track Meet”.

Buccleuch Park Push Race-The Put On!

What a weekend! I left work Thursday night excited about my three day weekend. My plan was to do a little chill skating on Friday and be well rested for the race hosted by the Rutgers Longboarding Club in New Brunswick, NJ and then have a relaxing Sunday Shred with my fellow Concrete Kings. Friday was not at all the chill day I expected it to be. Some cool cats from Rhode Island stopped by the shop and that was the end of my chill skating. By that time I had already skated the Williamsburg Bridge and done a few miles in Brooklyn and Manhattan…but they wanted some of this infamous “Bridge” you always hear us talking about. Off we went. The Bridge to Union Square to Times Square to Columbus Circle back down Fifth Ave and back over the Bridge. They had to peace out in the city but those guys did some hard skating. Thanks to them for coming through.

Saturday morning I woke up exhausted and pretty worried about my performance (I kept that to myself). Roommate drama kept me up until 2AM and our New York crew was meeting at Penn Station around 830. What do I do?…Wake up at 8AM and skate from Wall Street to Penn Station. Nothing like a good skate in Manhattan rush hour traffic to wake you up. Add that to a large latte and a train car full of hyped up city slickers and my blood was boiling by the time the train got us where we were going.

Bustin and the Concrete Kings rolled up at least 20 deep and heads were swiveling all over campus. We were there early so we decided to do breakfast at one of the local spots on campus. Steaks and eggs for me. I wasn’t trying to stay lite….I was hungry!  We rolled back to Buccleuch Park to find lots more skaters and more of our crew. We did a few laps to warm up and learn the route. It was three loops totaling around 3 miles, mostly flat. Perfect.

While waiting I met lots of cool NJ skaters and formally met some of the Original crew. Brian Bishop….love your style! At 12 we were at the starting line and ready to go. Save a little static from the cops and it started without a hitch. I suppose steak and eggs were exactly what I needed…three laps later I powerslid right after being the first to cross the finish line. Adam Crigler and Taras Apuzzo finished the podium for guys followed by more of the crew. Lady J aka Jenica Davenport aka the Queen B topped the girls podium with Micku Murgolo and Miss Hi-Def (Nathalie Herring). Bustin family and the Concrete Kings put on!

Congrats to all skaters who participated and even more to the Rutgers Longboarding Club headed up by Liam Gilroy for throwing such an awesome inaugural event. Live music, free food and tons of swag! Thanks for having us! You are always welcome here!

I have more to write about this weekend but it’s the beginning of the week and lots of work to do around the shop. I’ll be back tomorrow to fill you in on the rest of the weekend with a new video by Sergi Ferrer of the Concrete Kings’ Sunday Shred.

This is Push Culture (t.d.)

push culture nyc longboarding

What’s worse than a rainy day? Snow! Rain is temporary, snow is forever. Or at least it feels that way. I’m not sure how much snow we actually accumulated in NYC but it’s enough that skating will be pretty hazardous for a while. During the next few days we will go through a process of melting while the temp is barely above freezing and then an almost instant freezing, with the deadly black slush an almost constant. (For those of you who never have to leave Manhattan this doesn’t apply to you, that borough gets all the love and if you hadn’t seen it snow you might think the streets had heaters under the pavement!) For those of us that live in the best borough a.k.a. We Go Hard or anywhere not called Manhattan, we have to spend the next few days wondering why we have this feeling that we are forgetting something as we leave our apartments and exit that dreaded mass transit system. This morning I walked around my apartment an extra ten minutes before I could convince myself to leave. I told myself that it was my board I was missing but it took me a while before I was comfortable enough to leave without it. Then as I was getting off the L-train I had to do the look back check five times just to make sure I wasn’t leaving anything.

Bustin France – Coming Soon…

Recently my brother, Brian Davenport, and I spent some time in europe. We got to do a lot of great skating in a lot of great cities.  I spent most of my time in Paris, France and just like anywhere you skate for very long you inevitably meet the local skaters.  I was so lucky that a guy contacted me via my youtube page (travisdsupervilan) and told me he had seen me skating in the streets in paris and told me about the weekly board meeting for the local scene, which happened to be at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

It was a beautiful place to spend the evening, there’s  a nice small hill and lots of room for flat land fun, but more importantly about thirty skaters showed up with all different styles and boards.  Through the language barrier we managed to get a good feel about Paris longboarding; the scene, history, companies, skaters, events…….. The city is so ripe for Push Culture and I believe its just about to explode.  There are a lot of skaters but its still very unusual to run into another one on the streets.  It seems that the only thing holding back the market is retail issues.  For whatever reason sports and skate shops carry very few options of longboards and they generally start at 200 euro and do go well over 300 euro.  That exchanges to about 300 to 500 dollars for a board.  And that’s just not fair to our Euro bros and sisters.

So……long story short; I met these two guys in the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d3L5PtLBC8) that night at Trocadero.  From what I can tell Marvin Thine and Antoine Badin (aka mastaflex @ widiwici.com) are two of the most stoked riders in France!  I am happy to announce that they are going to be one of the main French connections for Bustin Boards!  We are working with them on wholesale to France right now and hope to have boards in shops by the spring.  We hope this relationship will mean that riders in France will have more choices and better prices, encouraging more skating worldwide!

Concrete Kings est 2009. Spreading the holiday love.

I know its been a while since my last blog but we have been super busy here at Bustin with the opening of our flagship store in Brooklyn. Working on getting everything running smoothly by our grand opening along with keeping up with holiday orders has me wondering if life exists outside Bustin! But I´m loving every minute of it. In my last blog I mentioned that Concrete Kings would be coming soon. I am greatly pleased to say that this group has now become New York City`s largest skate club, over 100 members! For the past few weeks we have been meeting at 2:00PM Sundays at the Columbus Square section of Central Park. I have dubbed this the Sunday Shred and every week am even more excited about the turnout. This past Sunday thirty skaters took over Fifth Avenue from Central Park down Union Square and across the Williamsburg Bridge to the new skate park in Williamsburg. The Bustin store was our final destination and will be every week. Sound like fun? What a rush! It`s amazing running these streets, controlling every lane, vehicles behind us and at the lights left with one option…wait! And what stoke we are spreading for NYC`s Push Culture! The love we get is electric..kids screaming, cops giving me high-fives and pictures constantly being snapped. We truly are the Concrete Kings. And this is only the beginning!

This in itself is amazing but the Concrete Kings are more than just a group of people getting together to skate. We understand the social platform we have been placed upon and we intend to use it. Our initiation skate was a ride through Manhattan to show support for ISAW, contact me for info on this NPO and thanks to these guys for allowing us to be a part of their endeavors. We`ve decided to keep that spirit going through the holidays by supporting a local Brooklyn battered women’s and children’s shelter. Now we ask for your help. It would help us greatly if you could stop by the BustinBrooklyn store with your canned goods to help out families in need for the holiday and beyond. Spread the word and let`s do what we can to help out! If you can`t make it I`m sure you will have no trouble finding a local shelter to support.

For more information on Concrete Kings and our holiday food drive contact me at kingsolomon@bustinboards.com.

Happy Holidays. Spread the Love….buy a longboard.
Solomon….Skate for fun!

My Bomb 09

Throwing out 288 shirts and watching that blue and yellow fill the streets of NYC was amazing.  I didnt get to see the start of the race bc Nick and I were on 110th trying to get some photos of Broadway filling up with 300 skaters.  Wave after wave of you passed by and finally we could take off.

I had told myself, no hard pushing, this isnt my race I thought.  Bum knee and too little cardio over the last couple months, didnt seem to slow me down too much…until the hill at Canal that is.  Keeping a steady medium pace, ducking through traffic, talking to riders rocking boards I had painted, all made the day just swell.  Dipping through congested rows of yellow cabs and tourist buses all while smiling for the 1000 cameras that were on Broadway that day.  Skitch a cab, skitch a bus, flirt with a pretty lady taking our picture and laugh as we blow the intersections never missing a beat.  Green light, yellow light, piiiinnnnkkkk light… solid red; didnt matter gotta push.
