Guide to the 2013 Maestro Collection

For over 10 years now, Bustin Boards has been making longboards. The roots of this company have always stemmed from the desire to create alternate forms of transportation that are both unique and fun. A few years back, we came the board that inspired a movement later coined as “push culture.” We took our mold with forward camber and overall rockered design and cut out a sexy, twin kicked, drop-through deck that was super low to the ground, totally unique, and fun to ride. This became the Maestro board, and it’s STILL one of our most popular decks week in and week out.

Vera Maestro

So what’s new, you ask? Let’s start with what changed the most. The MaestroPRO is the newest edition of the Maestro family and has replaced the Maestro FG (fiberglass). Many daily commuters have been daily commutin’ for quite some time now, and they’ve either already moved on to more technical boards and ride their Maestros just for a good comfy push, or they’re yearning for a similar feeling deck that will help them take their riding to the next level. Well, friends, this is the deck that can just about do it all.

Designed with a gentle camber in the center, an overall rockered platform with varying concave to provide flex in parts of the deck and stiffness where you need it. The overall mold is as bacon as it gets:

MaestoPRO Mold

But every curve has been designed with the final shape in mind. The final product provides some of the classic feel of the original Maestro with a more versatile symmetrical shape, foot locking 3D at the edge of the deck that works with the mild wedging to lock in on slides, serious concave around the neck to provide stiffness and strength, and a radial tail that keeps the tails stiff and strong despite being significantly larger than earlier models.

MAESTROPRO Money

There are two mounting options on the new MaestroPRO. We did this to offer riders more options to hone in the flex or add obscenely large wheels (we see this out of many commuters who want to roll over everything in their path). On the inner hole pattern, you can easily fit Randals, Paris, or Bear trucks and 70mm wheels with room for 75mm depending on bushing choice. This deck feels very lively with 50 degree trucks because of an 8 degree wedge on either side of the board. This was done to keep the lively feel of the original Maestro but functions very nicely by bumping down the truck angle to a 40 to 45. Randal 42s, Paris 43s, Bear 40s, and Ronins 42.5 degree trucks will all function very nicely on this deck. We set out MaetroPro up stock with Paris 50 degree trucks and 72mm Five-O wheels. The board is super responsive, fun to ride, and slides like a dream with this setup.

MaestroSideBlog

For most riders up to 200 pounds, this deck will have a fun flex that works with your push to provide a more lively ride. For larger riders who do lots of tricks, you may bottom out when landing aerial maneuvers depending on how hard you land on your feet. The sublimated graphic and triaxial fiberglass is tough and will withstand abuse over time, but for the big guys who want to do big tricks, we intend to bring in less flexy options in the future. For cruising and sliding, the flex is ideal for all riders up to 200 lbs. We do not recommend small wheels with this deck. It was designed with 70mm and larger wheels in mind, and because it sits very low with a modest flex, you are much more likely to bottom out with tiny wheels. If you have any questions about the flex, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 1-855-NYC-PUSH or email skate@bustinboards.com.

Let’s move on!

Maestro Mini

The 2013 Mini Maestro is here and ready for action. A couple key features separate this from it’s earlier model. First and foremost, it’s got a shorter wheelbase by an inch over the former Maestro Mini; however, the usable footspace remains the same, because we were careful to make the cutouts the perfect size to maximize space without risk of bite. With the wheelbase shorter, the tail becomes all the more functional, and to compensate, we made the tail significantly larger and added some design features to make it stronger and stiffer for added pop and strength.

The changes to the mold that we made are subtle yet effective. We have followed the way of the Yoface, making the tail come in at a radius. This strengthens the tail, adding stiffness and pop where you need it most. Furthermore, we increased concave around the neck compared to the rest of the board. This creates more stiffness around the thinnest part of the board, making it stronger and less susceptible to failure. Finally, we bumped this board up from 7 to 8 plies. With such a small profile, the deck is still very light and extremely nimble, but the added thickness adds strength and longevity. The Maestro Mini may be small, but it is mighty.

Maestro Mini profile

Set up your Maestro Mini with carving trucks like Paris, Bears, or Randals, and 70mm wheels. You can use larger wheels, but you will need to adjust the bushings to compensate and avoid bite. The good thing about this, though, is that the wheelbase is small enough that with limited turning of the trucks, you still get plenty of turn out of the actual board, which makes this a very versatile deck for your every day commute. Standard TKP trucks like Indys and Polar Bears will also work on this deck, but they will bump out the wheelbase just a touch, making your tails a little bit smaller. On the plus side, they are very low and have no chance of bite. An ideal commuter deck might be Polar Bear 180mm trucks and 75mm Royce wheels. You will be super low to the ground, bite free, and you can roll over anything in your path!

Maestro top

Finally we have the classic Maestro. We have only made a couple changes to the original, most of which is aesthetic. First, we will only be offering this deck in 8 ply from now on. This was done to increase strength and simplify the lineup overall. The 7-ply has been a great deck for us but with skaters evolving and pushing the limits of their gear, we must too evolve and make sure that their gear is ready to be pushed! With a little more torsional rigidity of the 8-ply Maestro, you will notice more control over your trucks and a little more agility as a result. A few finishing touches like sharper rails and dyed veneers make this the best looking and feeling all-wood Maestro to date! Set up your Maestro with 50-degree RKPs like Paris, Bear, Randal, or our Surf-Rodz trucks, or throw on some TKPs such as Polar Bear 180s, Indy 215s, or Surf-Rodz 177mm INDeeSZ to make an ultra low and nimble ride.

Maestro Graphic

The Maestro series is all about fun and transport. For a long riding, high flying, all-around shred stick, you can’t go wrong. Hopefully this blog has helped you discern what’s what, and if you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to email skate@bustinboards.com or call 1-855-NYC-PUSH to get your questions answered. Shred on!

Yofaces in Yo’ Faces – The Bustin Yoface Series Rundown

The Yoface invasion has begun. Three decks in 3 sizes are available today for a variety of different riding styles, all sporting the same general features for a seamless transition from one deck to another. Skateboarder, longboarder, human rocket ship…whatever you want to call yourself, you can ride one of these decks.

3-D Wheel wells rise up 1/8-inch form the concave, providing comfortable foot locators and enhancing the pockets between the wheel wells and tails without getting in the way during tricks. The added sanded wheel wells help to create over 1/4-inch of extra wheel clearance over your average skate deck.

Yoface Decks

In most aspect of life, curves are sexy when they have form and function. This is the mantra behind Bustin design. When you look at that picture above, we want one thought going through all of our heads: I want to put my feet in that. We can’t speak for the rest of the world, but this is how we feel about these decks, these curves. This is not some futuristic design before its time. This is now. And it’s awesome!

The details are all over the web. I won’t bore you with too much of that. I will give you a little extra info on setups though, and some of my personal insight that I have taken from the development of these boards, and hopefully that will help people who have some questions in their mind.

Yoface32 Side

The Yoface 32 is officially 31.675 inches long and just about 8.675 (that .675 is 5/8″) wide at the widest point, which is in the very middle of the deck. It’s got a tiny 13.75″ wheelbase with big 6 3/4″ tails. It is a bit short and wide (there are words for that) but this was done to make the board extremely agile and nimble but also comfortable. The deck has tons of pop. David Anders is the best “short boarder” we have in our shop. He does every trick I know exists both regular and switch. Meanwhile he’s teaching me what I keep doing wrong with my kickflips. We lined the Yoface32 up to his favorite deck, and it took him no time to get used to. His ollies are every bit as huge, he’s nailing all his technical tricks, and he’s still ripping it up on our weekly mini ramp sessions. AND he has a new deck of choice, which means a lot to us. His old board is collecting dust (give that thing away already!). It’s good to see him popping frontside flips down the hall on a Bustin.

Freestylin

At roughly 8.5 inches wide, the Yoface32 is ideally fit with centerset skate wheels and approximately 149mm/8.5-inch trucks. We have chosen to offer it with Indy 149s and Gullwing Shadow 8.5″ trucks on our website. There are boatloads of skate trucks out there that will work, though. With the added clearance, popping on a set of 64mm Five-Os for everyday cruising is totally possible without riser. Gotta love that versatility. Smaller trucks have less up and down travel, so you will rarely have any issues with bite on this deck as long as you are smart about setting it up. It’s the easiest “short board” to set up without bite ever!

Yoface35bottom

The 35 is still rolling strong. As a team favorite for 2012, we chose to change only a couple aesthetic details, and we took into account all the feedback we’d gotten on the deck since its release and updated the nose and tail shape. Our riders really wanted to be able to do it all on the board, and rounder kicktails results in easier flip tricks for all you technical riders out there. Having a smaller profile also makes this deck a little lighter and a little more air friendly.

Sanchez Air

This deck measures in at 9.125″ wide and 34.675″ long, give or take a few thousandths
of an inch. Ideally, it is set up with 9″ trucks. The best trucks we have found for this deck are the Indy 169mm (which actually measure more like 163mm), Gullwing 9″ Shadows and Pro-III trucks, and what we chose to put on our completes, the Polar Bear 155mm. Polar Bears are so low that you can set them up with 1/4″ riser (this is how it will come stock) and it still sits almost exactly as low as an Indy. The plus side, however, is that they are easily one of the strongest trucks on the market, with reinforced bracing built into the design, and the bushings respond very nicely when you tighten them down, so your ride is much more easily adjustable. It’s a win, win, and that’s why they’re our top recommendation. 1/4″ risers, Polar Bear 155mm and some 64mm centerset Bustin Five-Os are like a portable stoke-gasm. Don’t get weirded out about that…it’s a good thing.

Yoface39

Our newest pride and joy is the Yoface39. We hate to play favorites, but we find this to be the most versatile board of the bunch…call us longboarders, I guess, but hey, we like to go fast and stuff! The 39, with its multiple wheelbase options for switching between TKP skateboard mode and RKP go-fast mode, is extremely versatile. As an 8-ply deck, it’s not the most lightweight of the bunch, but the huge nose and tails give it tons of leverage and it still gets up in the air without argument. The nicest thing about doing tricks with a big deck is all the footspace that you have to land on the board once its in the air.

Royce Yoface39

Though your ollie might be a couple inches lower, the 39 makes up for it with more versatility on the speed spectrum. The wheelbases range from 19 to 21 inches. The outermost holes are designed to be used with trucks that bring in the wheelbase a lot, like Calibers or Aeras, for example. Most RKPs will line up on the outer old-school hole pattern and allow the wheels to fall right into the center of the wheel wells. This board is 9.5 inches wide and designed with 180mm-ish trucks in mind. That’s the majority of your downhill trucks, Indy 215s, and we chose to hook it up on our completes with Polar Bear 180mm trucks. Again, 1/4″ riser and you’re good to go and still sitting low. I ride my 39-incher with Bones 54mm skate wheels on the mini ramp and then switch it over to our 64mm Five-Os for everyday cruising/sliding/whatevering. I have hooked it up with my Ronins on occasion and 35mph downhill runs plus high speed sliding felt AWESOME. And yes, the 39 is a boss on the mini. Surf-style all day!

Hope this has been useful and got you pumped for these news decks. We sure are here! We are finding reasons all day long to ride down the hallway to communicate with one another. Yea, we have an intercom system on our phones, but when there’s a Yoface next to you, it’s much more fun to skate 50 feet and attempt a kickflip along the way. They’re getting better every day!

Last thing I wanted to say about these decks is that they’re as reasonably priced as we could afford to make them. We really want everyone who is interested in riding them to ride them, and to do it without fear. They are STRONG decks, but as William Royce said to me after he became the first and only rider to snap the Yoface32, “Welcome to the world of skateboarding.” Go ahead and Click this link for more info, to set up your virtual deck, and to make a purchase. Your feet will thank you later!

Wind Waves and Wheels – Featured Retailer – Bustin Longboards NYC

Solomon here. It’s been a while since I’ve been active on our blog here. From being on the road to taking on different roles in the company I have not been able to keep up with my blogging as much as I would prefer. I’m back! This is our first year really focusing on wholesale and I have started getting comfortable heading up this push. Just in time for the busy summer season!

Starting now I will be doing a weekly spotlight on the different shops where you will be able to find the Bustin line; domestic and abroad. Our first feature is Wind Waves and Wheels located in Kentwood, Michigan. The store,Michigan’s premier skateboard/snowboard retailer, has been around since 1984 and is owned by Todd Andrew. Bustin legend, Mike Dallas, is a local to the area and has been hanging at this shop for years! If you’re in the area in Michigan stop by 3624 29th Street S.E. and tell them the crew at Bustin says “whaddup!”.

Yoface is LIVE – Bustin Longboards NYC

Look close, this is not your average skateboard. The Bustin Yoface is a 35-inch bowl-riding, tech sliding, street skating, olliable city cruiser featuring a comfortable but aggressive concave and curves throughout the deck that add to it’s stiffness as well as it’s pop.  Many of today’s city skaters are finding themselves eyeing bigger, softer wheels, unwilling to give up their double kicks and being forced to add loads of riser pads to compensate for wheelbite.  Enter the Yoface, a world where this problem is drastically reduced by a custom mold with wheel wells pressed into the shape and then further sanded out for maximum clearance over the wheels. In practice, the wells also provide for more foot-locking concave in the tech sliding position than any deck on the market.  The radial tail retains a mild concave outside of the bolt holes and provides for more grip and extra stiffness for added pop.  Proudly made in the USA and proudly bridging the gap between longboarding and skateboarding.  As always, the Bustin Yoface is available to customize through our online Build-A-Board Program as a Limited Edition Graphic or Fully Custom Graphic.  For all the specs and more details on the concept, please visit the Yoface Specs page at BustinBoards.com.

Also, to compliment the new Yoface deck we worked with SurfRodz to develop a brand new Indeesz 159 complete truck.  This special edition truck and custom bushing setup (included and assembled) has been dialed in to work perfectly with the Yoface wheel wells for tech sliding and freestyle skating.  Learn more a the Surfrodz/Bustin Collabo 159mm truck specs page.
