Welcome back kids! Last week on “Built By Bubbles” we took the first steps towards developing a production level board! We thought about the board, we thought about what we wanted the board to be, we considered the board’s own personal feelings, and we landed on a shape (to be fair, we landed on version 1.0 – plenty more versions to come!)
This is a cool video that demonstrates the craftsmanship behind the creation a longboard. The process is long and tedious but the final product is magical. There are dozens of methods used to create a deck but every method requires a mold, veneer, glue and a press, unless you start with pre-fab plywood. I have seen some of the most ghetto presses you could imagine that actually work – and elaborate, well thought out designs that completely fail. The best longboard deck takes on many shape changes and modifications before the perfect final product is produced. Keep this in mind when you take your next cruise. The magical deck that you skate went through this process and is designed to skate fast. Shred on.

This weekend has been forcasted to be rainy and windy. The forcast is spot on. The past few days have been so wet that streets are too flooded for cars, and longboards. I received a few calls at the shop today about riding in the rain. My answer was simple. Yes, you can ride in the rain. water can damage a board and rust your beraings/hardware but there are plenty of products that protect and cleanse your components against the elements. Bones makes a product called “Speed Lube” that will extend the life of your bearings, bushings and bushing cups. We learned a couple drops of Speed Lube will fix a jammed lock mechanism this afternoon. Bustin also carries bearing cleaning kit made by Bones. The kit is simple and effective. Paired with the Speed Creram, the Bones cleaning kit is the ultimate repair kit for a longboard (next to the multi-tool).
Moral of the story, it is ok to ride in the rain. Don’t forget to clean your bearings and lube afterwards because water does affect their longevity. Remember, there is a solution to almost everything longboarding.
Don’t hesitste to ask!
